2001
The Waterfront, Cape Town

Published:

Under the auspices of Public-Eye I curated ‘Homeport’ in 2001. 15 artists created site specific text based works in Cape Town’s waterfront precinct.

This was a project initiated by Cell, a Rotterdam based cultural organisation that saw 6 harbour cities host art interventions in public spaces collectively called Homeport. Havana, Rotterdam, Mumbai, Shanghai and Jakarta, with Cape Town as the 6th and final city to host this event.

The project involved a series of artistic explorations of harbour cities around the world, with Cape Town's project utilizing text and visual art to interpret the theme of a harbour city's significance. The project aimed to explore the cultural and economic roles of harbour cities, including their impact on residents, workers, and international visitors.

The artists were:
Doreen Southwood
Vuyisa Nyamende
Malcolm Payne
Alan Alborough
Warrick Sony
Roderick Hartzenberg
Jean Brundrit
Bridget Baker
William Hewett
Peet Pienaar
John Nankin
Barend De Wet
Andrew Putter
Natasha Becker
