Continuity and Change
‘Smokkel’ was curated by Brett Murray and Robert Wienek as part of the 2nd Johannesburg Art Biennale fringe in 1997.’Smokkel’ is vernacular for ‘smuggle’. The theme for the biennale was trade and trade routes. The venue was a disused corner shop where Peet Pienaar, Werner Vermeulen, Lisa Brice, Barend de Wet, Ian Waldeck, Kevin Brand and Brett Murray produced works around the idea of trade.
