The 5th Havana Biennale, officially known as the "Quinta Bienal de la Habana”, took place in May 1994. It coincided with a period of economic hardship in Cuba. The main theme of the event was "Art, Society and Reflection" with a focus on fragmented spaces, migrations, cultural hybridity and appropriations. It explored the relationship between art and society, power, marginalization and migrations.
It featured works by over 200 artists from Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the USA, and included 17 artists from South Africa.
An edited version of the 5th Cuban Biennale was exhibited at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen in September 1994.
Curated by Gerardo Mosquera, Nelson Herrera Ysla, and Llilian Llanes, director of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center and the Biennale.
